Newmont To Negotiate Payout Package For Over 600 Workers

Mining firm Newmont says it will soon engage the Ghana Mine Workers Union to negotiate a memorandum of understanding regarding packages for the over 600 workers to be laid off. It has already notified the Chief Labour officer and the union about the intended move. Newmont intends laying off about 600 workers by the second quarter of this year due to high cost of production among other factors. It will be the second time in about four months that it is undertaking such an exercise. Adiki Ayitevie, the Director of External Affairs and Communication in an interview with XYZ News noted that the mining firm will negotiate a payout package for the affected employees. �We have notified the Chief Labour Officer, We have also notified the Ghana mines Workers Union and we will be meeting with them to negotiate a memorandum of understanding will cover the payout package for the affected employees�.
