Water supply to Eastern parts of Accra is expected to normalize by the close of day Monday following the completion of maintenance works at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant. The Kpong plant was shutdown on Thursday, February 27, 2013 to allow contractors undertake critical pipeline interconnections. Rehabilitation works are underway at the plant under the Kpong Intake and Accra, Tema Metropolitan Area Rural Rehabilitation and Expansion (ATMA) projects which is to ensure the production of an additional nine million gallons of water per day. The shutdown last week was therefore to to allow contractors undertake critical pipeline interconnections for the bigger project which is expected to be completed in three months. This resulted in water shortages in some parts of Accra but speaking on Radio Gold Monday morning, the Chief Manager in charge of Communications at the Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr Michael Agyeman said the maintenance works were completed on Sunday. He expressed optimism that water supply to affected areas would resume today - Monday. �We started production last night and we are sure that nothing will go wrong. Since we started pumping we have not seen any leakage and so we are very hopeful that everything is ok now. And now that water has started flowing through, I�m sure that by close of day people should see water flowing through their taps,� he said. Mr. Agyeman also noted that the Kpong Intake Rehabilitation Project and the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Area Rural Water rehabilitation is expected to be completed in the next three months. He said, when completed, an additional daily production of 12.3 million gallons of water would be added to the already existing 6 million gallons. Areas affected by the shortage as a result of the shutdown were Tema, Ashaiman, Lashibi, Michel Camp, Afienya, Prampram, Ningo, Somanya, Dodowa, Akuapim, Ridge Areas, Adenta, Madina, Shelley-Botwe, Adjiringano, East Legon, Legon, Ashongman, Kwabenya, Taifa, Dome, Achimota and surrounding areas. Other areas include Abelemkpe, Dzorwulu, Roman Ridge, Airport Residential Area, 37, Kanda, Nima, Maamobi, Pig Farm, Kotobaabi, Kokomlemle, Cantonments, Ridge, Osu, La, Labone, Burma Camp, Teshie, Nungua, Baatsona, Spintex Road and surrounding areas.
