Woman, 3 Children Killed In Explosion At Ejisu

A 60 year old woman, Akua Afriyie, and her three children were burnt to death Monday dawn at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region. The children include a twin, a boy and a girl, twelve years, whose names were given as Alpha and Omega, and the third called Gloria.The incident occurred at about 12:00am when neighbors were woken to the sound of an explosion from the house where the woman and her children lived. A next door neighbor who saw the billowing flames managed to break into the metal railings behind the windows and rescued four people. However, before he got to the room of Madam Akua Afriyie and her children, the flames had increased to the extent that he could not get close. The screams from the room gradually died down till silence, indicating that the four had all perished in the flames.Ultimate Radio�s Nana Oye Diabene who visited the scene reports that neighbors are suspecting a gas cylinder that exploded may have caused the fire. Nana Oye reports that, a twenty-six year old man who happens to be the son of the deceased, is feared dead after sustaining severe burns in his attempt to rescue his mother and the children. District Fire officer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Fire station, Francis Darko Konor confirmed told Ultimate Radio that the house was a seven bedroom apartment but three rooms were completely ravaged by the fire He says the Ejisu fire station that were closer to the scene had a faulty fire tender and had to fall on the KNUST fire station for a fire tender to be dispatched to the scene. He said the firemen from Ejisu however attended to the scene with their limited equipment and were able to save two persons who had sustained some burns. �The two were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital by the Ghana National Ambulance Service and are now receiving treatment� he added. says for now the cause of the explosion is unknown although investigations are underway.
