The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has abandoned its Wenchi Constituency Youth Organizer, Abukari Mahama, after a failed attempt by assassins believed to be members of his own party, to kill him on March 15, 2012.
Mahama, a Circuit Supervisor with the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Wenchi District of the Brong-Ahafo Region, suffered acid burns after the failed assassination attempt, and has developed complex keloids on the upper part of his body.
The Youth Organizer, who is suffering complications, disclosed that the NDC deserted him when medical reports had shown that his health situation was fast deteriorating and required urgent attention.
Narrating his ordeal to Tamale based Diamond FM, Mr. Mahama disclosed that several efforts to get the party come to his aid had proved futile, adding that he was told by his party General Secretary, Mr. Jonhson Asiedu Nketia, that his medical expenses could not be covered by the party�s Heroes Fund.
According to him, on March 15, 2012, a young man by name Kojo Bullocks, a houseboy of the then Wenchi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Nana Yaw Osei Agyei, visited him and asked for transportation to travel.
He offered to help since he believed he was a member of the NDC, but while accompanying him, his door key fell on the ground and so he bent down in an effort to pick it but his friend, who at the time was holding a polythene bag, emptied the content onto him, which turned out to be acid.
Mahama said the culprit was later arrested, and together with two others � said to be members of the NDC � were arraigned before a Sunyani High Court, but he said the leaders of his party maneuvered to let the trial judge convict the culprits to only four months� jail term with a fine of GH�10,000 meant to assist him in his medical care, although the crime was a first degree felony.
According to Mr. Mahama, experts contacted in South Africa referred him to India, and said he rneeded three plastic surgeries with an estimated cost of $23,000 to rectify the anomalies on his skin. He disclosed that the party rightly refused to assist him.
However, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia disclosed that the party adequately took care of him while at the Police Hospital, until his condition improved.
According to him, it was later discovered that Mahama was taking money from the National Security and other high-ranking members of the party, claiming he had been neglected, and wanted to be appointed a District Chief Executive.
�Who tells him the criterion for selecting ministers and DCEs is through acid pouring?� Asiedu Nketia asked, adding that Mr. Mahama could not compel the party into making him a minister or DCE when he was not a good material for any of those appointments.
