Namesakes On Trial For Rape

Two name sakes-Ebenezer Abeka and Ebenezer Mensah, both 18 - who allegedly conspired with another young man and gang raped a 13-year-old girl at Millenium City, Kasoa have been remanded in custody by the Agona Swedru Circuit Court. Their alleged accomplice, identified only as Kofi, is said to be on the run. Abeka and Mensah, both labourers working on a building project at Millenium City, Kasoa, pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy and defilement. Their plea prompted the Presiding Judge of the court , Mr Yaw Atta Sampong, to remand them in prison custody for a fortnight. Presenting the facts of the case, Inspector S. Opoku Mensah indicated that at about 3.45 p.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014, the victim went in search of firewood around the building site. Inspector Mensah stated that Abeka invited the girl and asked her to fetch water for them for a fee, which she consented to. According to the prosecutor, the girl was in the process of executing the assignment given her when Abekah asked her to enter their room and change the bucket, since the one she was using was too small. Inspector Mensah said as soon as the girl entered the room, the trio followed suit, gripped her and sexually abused her in turns. The prosecutor said the victim started shouting for help which attracted some good Samaritans to her rescue, as well as the arrest of the two, but Kofi managed to escape. He said a medical form issued by the police for examination later confirmed that the girl had, indeed, been defiled.
