Yendi Municipal Hospital receives 30 CSM cases

The Yendi Municipal Hospital has received 30 cases of Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM), with eight confirmed. . Mr Awuni Mbabila, Yendi Municipal Disease Control Officer, who announced this when he briefed the Yendi Municipal Epidemic Management Committee meeting at Yendi in the Northern Region, said the affected districts were Yendi, Mion, Zabzugu and Saboba. Mr. Mbabila advised anybody with severe head and neck pains to report to a health facility. . He said the Hospital Epidemic Management Team has moved to the affected areas in the Municipality, to assess the situation, and to also educate residents about the disease. He said health workers of the health centres in the sub-districts were also carrying out intensive public sensitization on the disease, to avoid an outbreak after the Hospital Team has sensitized them. He said the district Health Centers have been advised to refer all suspected CSM cases to the Hospital for laboratory test. the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Issah Zakaria, who is the Chairman of the committee, said the CSM is becoming an alarming issue in the Municipality and it is upon this that an emergency meeting was called involving the Military Detachment, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Red Cross, the Veterinary Service, Religious Leaders, Assembly Members, Environmental Health Unit, Information Services Department, and the NCCE, among others. Mr. Zakaria indicated that there was no need for them to wait for the disease to spread all over the Municipality before they met, because in such cases it would be difficult to control the disease. During contributions and question time, an appeal was made to the Ghana Health Service, to team up with the Information Services Department, to carry out education programmes on the disease. They appealed to government to supply CSM vaccines to the Yendi Hospital to enable the authorities carry out massive vaccinations within the Municipality, to avoid any outbreak of the disease.
