Food security project for children launched

Two Universities have launched a five year project aimed at improving health and household food security for infants and children. The Nutrition and Food Science Department of the University of Ghana, and McGill University in Montreal, Canada launched the project at Asesewa in the Upper Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region. The initiative, supported by the Government of Canada, is aimed at integrating capacity building of rural staff, health and agricultural interventions. The project would foster collaboration among workers in sectors of health, agriculture, education, finance in the region to develop district-level capacity in nutrition, and to examine intervention packages where integrated activities (for example, agricultural and health) are combined to promote food security and health. Dr Frederek Gyebi-Twum, Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA), who launched the project involving 3,000 households, particularly for women and girls in the area, urged communities to support the project to achieve its objectives. He said the objectives of the project were in line with those of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. About 300 families are expected to be trained in poultry raising, kitchen gardens, and nutrition education through collaboration with Heifer International Ghana.
