A father who smashed his 15-year-old sons head with a club for failing to come home early after church service was on Wednesday sentenced to two years imprisonment by An Accra Circuit Court. Benjamin Asare, a trader charged with intentionally and unlawfully causing harm, pleaded not guilty. The court presided over by Ms Sedina Agbemava, however found Asare guilty and convicted him accordingly. Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said the victim was a Junior High School graduate who lived with the father at Tabora. She said on September 8, 2012; the victim went to church and after the service, he visited his friends within the vicinity and kept long in returning home, compelling the father to look for him. At about 2300 hours, prosecution said the victim returned home and found the doors locked and called his sister to open the door but she was asleep. Prosecution said as the victim tried to open one of the doors, Asare emerged at the scene and threatened the victim not to enter. The victim was standing in the house when his father rushed on him and smashed his head with a club. He fell down and blood started gushing out from the cut so he visited the washroom to wash it off. The victim therefore decided to seek help outside but he noticed that the door was locked. Prosecution said when the victim approached his father he hit his head again with a sharp object. The victim then run out of the room and sought refuge with a witness and a tenant in the house. ASP Acquah said the victim, who sustained deep cuts on his scalp was rushed to the hospital where his wounds were stitched. Prosecution said the victim informed his mother who was based in Kumasi and a report was made at the Odorkor Police station and the matter was referred to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit, Tesano in Accra, leading to the arrest of Asare.
