The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) at the weekend commissioned three boreholes in the various military barracks in Tamale to augment inadequate water supply and reduce the cost of utilities by the Government. The three hand-pump boreholes were constructed at the cost of GH₵10,000 each with funding from the peace-keeping contributions of the personnel. Lieutenant Colonel James Hagan, Commanding Officer of the Sixth Infantry Battalion (6BN), who commissioned the projects, said it would serve the domestic needs of the personnel and also supply the surrounding communities with water. The commissioning of the boreholes took place after the GAF and the Ghana Police Service had a combined route march through some principal streets of Tamale to promote inter-service cohesion, espirit de corps, and encourage fitness among the troops. Lt Colonel Hagan commended the personnel for devoting some of their monies towards the project and urged them to do same to aid the rehabilitation of the barracks, saying the barracks had not seen any renovation since its construction in 1962. He entreated the military and the police personnel to continue to work together harmoniously to protect lives and property, stressing that the two agencies had worked positively in combating armed robbery through the �operation cow leg and operation gong-gong�. The Commander said the police were their compatriots and encouraged them to give off their best to complement that of the GAF saying, �the police should be lenient with the military when arresting military personnel on offences�.
