Car Snatcher Escapes Lynching

The timely intervention of the Madina Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent M A Yakubu, prevented an angry mob from lynching a suspected car snatcher at Legon, behind TF Hostels, Accra. The suspect, identified as Sonla Munja believed to be in his early 30s according to police reports, attempted to snatch a Toyota Camry saloon car from its owner around 4:00 am yesterday. Suspect allegedly crossed and attacked the victim who was travelling alone that dawn, and attempted to snatch the car. The victim called for help which attracted a number of people around the area. Sonla Munja attempted to escape but the mob descended on him, gave him severe beatings before the police officer arrived to save him. Chief Superintendent Yakubu told DAILY GUIDE that Sonla Munja was immediately whisked away by a police patrol team who were called to the scene. He was then detained by the police to help in investigations. Preliminary investigations by the police, according to Chief Superintendent Yakubu, indicated that suspect pretended to be a mentally deranged person before attacking the victim. Police later discovered that he was wearing fine cloths underneath the ragged cloths he was wearing. A new pair of jeans Sonla Munja wore underneath the tattered cloths had been seized by the police and would be used as evidence to prosecute him at the court of law. Another victim, according to the Police Commander, upon hearing the news, reported at the station that he was attacked by the suspect using the same modus operandi a week before.
