The Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona East in the Central Region, Miss Queenstar Pokua Sawyerr, has enjoined parents to observe their children on daily basis for any unusual behaviour or physical change and report the condition to the hospital immediately. This, she opined, would ensure that quick solutions are found to any challenge or behavioural change that will negatively impact on the growth of children. The MP, who is also the Deputy Central Regional Minister, stated this in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra days after her representatives had presented GH�1200 to the mother of six-year-old Ezekiel Annan, a hernia patient. The money was handed over to Joy News, an Accra-based television station. An amount of GH�1000 is meant to pay for the surgery and the remaining GH�200 is for Ezekiel�s mother to expand her �pure water� business. The MP, who doubles as the Deputy Central Regional Minister, also appealed to those who had the means to assist the less privileged in their communities, especially children, to meet their health and educational needs. �My information is that for five years Ezekiel�s mother could not get the help to pay GH�200 for the surgery and now it is GH�1000, so she had to resort to the media for assistance. Community members must at least give some collective assistance,� Miss Pokua Sawyerr said. She added that she did not care about one�s background, such as where one hailed from, when it came to offering the needed help. �I give assistance once it helps a life and I�m touched,� the deputy minister said. Miss Pokua Sawyerr, commonly known as Maame Pokua in her constituency, is popular among her constituents for her readiness to assist people to meet their health and educational needs, and to expand their petty trading. Miss Diana Hagan, for instance, praised the MP for offering her GH�1000 to assist in paying for the surgery carried out at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in May last year on her two-year-old son who was detected to have spinal and hydrocephalus problems at birth. �My husband and I have named our child after Maame Pokua, and so my son is now Papa Kwame Poku,� she said in Fanti with a lot of joy. Another person from the Agona East Constituency, Mr Richard Antwi Buabeng, a wood seller at Agona Swedru, said �if you want to know the worth of Maame Pokua, go round the communities in the constituency.� He said it was common knowledge in the area that the MP was paying the fees of 250 students at the Kwanyarko, Nsaba Presbyterian and Swedru senior high schools and �we also know she has helped in extending electricity to some of the villages.
