The University of Education, Winneba, will from the 2014-2015 academic year, start new academic programmes as part of plans to expand its courses through direct admissions and by distance education at the under graduate, post-graduate and certificate levels.
The University will introduce a Master of Philosophy in Early Childhood Education, Master of Philosophy in Speech Therapy and Postgraduate Diploma in Education by distance.
Additionally, the Academic Board of the University has approved for introduction, distance education in Diploma and degree courses in Early Childhood Education, Management Studies, Accounting and Human Resource Management.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Kwasi Asabre-Ameyaw, disclosed this at the passing out of more than 700 students of the University who had completed their studies by distance in the northern sector of the country, at a ceremony in Kumasi.
Professor Asabre-Ameyaw disclosed also that from September this year, SSSCE and WASSCE holders as well as non-professional teachers will be given direct admission to pursue degree courses by distance in the university.
The Vice Chancellor announced that the University will soon open new study centers in Ho, Sunyani and Somanya to add up to its existing 24 Study Centers scattered across the country.
Importantly, the UEW, in partnership with the African Virtual University in Kenya, has established a Center to run Online academic programmes in Teacher Education, Science, Mathematics and ICT.
Professor Asabre-Ameyaw disclosed that the University is in the process of clearing a quantity of equipment valued at more than one point-six million Dollars towards the start of the Online programme.
According to him, the University is giving enough attention to research activities while its infrastructural base is fast expanding at all of its Campuses at Winneba, Kumasi, Asante Mampong and Ajumako.
The Vice Chancellor thanked the government, GETFund and other collaborators for their significant contribution towards the progress of the institution.
He advised the graduating students against complacency but set targets for their career advancement and social life while putting into good use, the skills, attitudes and training they have acquired.
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, Dr. Emmanuel Andoh, noted that the University responded positively to the government�s appeal to the public tertiary educational institutions to create more room for the two streams of SHS graduates by increasing its admission quota from five thousand, to more than seven thousand during the current academic year.
Dr. Andoh thanked the Government for waving taxes on 10 thousand iPads imported by the University for its Master�s programme and also the Techiman Traditional Council for completing documentation for the 300-acre land for the UEW�s proposed College of Distance Education and Extension Services.
