Ghana To Make Shooting Appearance In Glasgow

Ghana will stage a maiden appearance in shooting at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games scheduled for July, 2014. Cillian George Walsh, chairman of the Ghana National Rifle Association (GNFA) told the GNA Sports that currently, 12 athletes were competing for the four available slots for the competition, their first international participation. He said the 12 are drawn from the security services but the association hoped to embrace all eligible Ghanaians in one of the oldest competitive sports represented at the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics in the near future. Walsh said the Association would compete in two disciplines - Mens 50 meter prone and Womens 50 meter three positions at the Commonwealth Games and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. We have two medal hopefuls in two disciplines going to Glasgow. This will be the first time a shooting team from Ghana has competed internationally and it affords Ghana a fantastic opportunity to compete at the highest level. The depth of talent is very impressive especially amongst the female shooters competing in the three positions which technically is the most difficult discipline. Competition for the four Commonwealth Games Places is tight with only two male and two female athletes in attendance. The GNRA was ratified by the Ghana and International Olympic Committee in 2012 and in November 2013 affiliated with the International Shooting Sports Federation and granted Federation Status for all shooting sports in Ghana.
