The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has tasked the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to give true meaning to the decentralisation policy by making development a priority in the metropolis.
He said the era of shoddy works and underhand dealings in the implementation of development projects did not benefit the people and must be discouraged.
The Asantehene gave the caution at the Manhyia Palace yesterday when the 42 assembly members of the KMA, led by the Chief Executive, Mr Kojo Bonsu, paid a courtesy call on him to lend support to the 15th anniversary celebration of his enstoolment, which is expected to be climaxed with a grand durbar at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on May 11, 2014.
The assembly presented assorted drinks, two white rams and an unspecified sum to support the celebration, which began early this year.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu said the essence of being assembly members was to serve and neither to lord it over the people nor settle individual scores.
He called for unity within the rank and file of the KMA and urged them to eschew factionalism and bickering.
Mr Bonsu identified the three main problems � lawlessness, poor sanitation and recklessness � on the part of drivers as were hindering development in the metropolis.
He pleaded with the Asantehene to help the assembly deal with the problem of the construction of unauthorised structures and buildings in Kumasi.
Mr Bonsu assured Otumfuo of the assembly�s desire to put in place the right measures to transform Kumasi into a proper �Garden City.�
To this end, he officially invited the Asantehene to formally launch the �Me and My Tree Planting competition�, which is part of the greening exercise in Kumasi.
The competition is being organised for schoolchildren and the winners in the various categories would be given scholarship and computers.
