Deputy Minister for Education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that scrapping teacher allowance, among other reasons, is to ensure equity within the teaching profession. Contributing to the debate on the teacher�s allowances on Accra-based First Digital�s flagship Morning Show, The First Show, Hon. Ablakwa said government was reforming the educational sector to ensure better improvement hence the need to consider the teacher trainee allowance as one area that needs restructuring. Hon. Ablakwa was responding to a call by the Progressive People�s Party (PPP) for government to reconsider the decision on the scrapping of the teacher trainee allowances He said lack of resources was another reason that was assigned to the action. Meanwhile teachers still have some benefits like feeding grants. The deputy education minister said the action which has received negative responses from the public has rather helped in increasing applications into the teacher trainee colleges. Member of the PPP�s communication team, Richmond Keelson, who was on the programme said the minister�s explanation which sought to say that lack of resources informed the action cannot be true. He based his arguments on teaching aids and international grants which he believes is enough to raise the standards in the teaching profession. Mr. Keelson therefore urged government to put a proper monitoring system to monitor the finances within the educational sector to cushion activities.
