Harness Cultural Renaissance For National Development

Mrs Paulina Delali Adinyirah, Kpando Municipal Chief Executive, has called for the revival of cultural and traditional renaissance in the country, to serve as a platform to harness the time tested values and norms of society for national development. She observed that westernization, including technological advancement and the proliferation of cable television networks dishing out foreign cultures, have been identified as responsible for the adulteration of the rich cultural values that the country was bequeathed to. Mrs Adinyira, made the call at a day's cultural extravaganza organised by the Volta Regional and Kpando Municipal Directorates of the Centre for National Culture (CNC), under the auspices of the Kpando Assembly. It was under the theme, "Re-introducing Our Dying Culture, Educate People, Develop and Promote Our Culture." She said these foreign networks were fast rebranding the focus of the youth, which needed to be reversed with parents taking centre-stage. Mrs Adinyira bemoaned the wayward dressing of some children, students and particularly adults, that expose vital parts of their bodies, all in the name of modernity and associated swag. The MCE asked the CNC to collaborate closely with traditional authorities towards making inimical cultural and traditional practices such as trokosi and widowhood rites modernized and humane for members of society. Mrs Adinyira called for the re-introduction of "Courtesy for Boys and Girls" into the school system in addition to developing curricula to imbibe values and norms that shape the psyche and the heartbeat of the country. "Any society that shuns its culture will definitely come back to pick the pieces together, or will become a stranger in their motherland." Ms Comfort Ohene, Municipal Director of CNC re-echoed that culture is gradually dying hence the need to bring back such activities. She said drumming and dancing constitute only an aspect of culture, as food, dialect, music, folklore, dressing, greeting and funeral add up to list. Ms Ohene noted with regret that sexual promiscuity was on the ascendency, teenage pregnancy was becoming a fashion, homosexuality and lesbianism in vogue with parental irresponsibility and child waywardness assuming a human right level.
