Armed Robber Dies Fighting Police

One suspected armed robber was on Wednesday night killed in a gun battle with the police at Ashaiman but three others got away and the Tema Regional Police Command are looking for them. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, Tema Regional Police Commander, told journalists in Tema that Asorkor, 21, was a member of a robbery syndicate headed by Augustine Lubayele aged 25. �Following recent reports by some residents of the periphery communities of Ashaiman, men were deployed to gather intelligence in order to arrest the perpetrators,� she said. DCOP Vib-Sanziri said at about 0130 hours on Wednesday the gang members assembled at their usual meeting place to plan for the night but the police spotted them, acting on intelligence. DCOP Vib-Sanziri said when the patrol team moved towards them Asorkor opened fire and the patrol team returned fire resulting in his death. She said a search conducted at the meeting place revealed 28 AA live cartridges, two wedding rings, two lap top computers, eight pen drives, one Tigo sim card and one AK47 bayonet. She said the success of the operation was due to collaboration between the public and the police and appealed to the public to give police information and that that their identities would be protected. DCOP Vib-Sanziri called on the public to help find Augustine Lubayale, the group�s leader, and their two accomplices. She said it was illegal to harbour a criminal and that the Police were looking for these suspects for their involvement in several robberies recorded in the region. The Police Regional Commander requested all victims of robbery in the Ashaiman area to come to the Tema Police Regional Headquarters to identify the items.
