Three security personnel of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and a trader on Tuesday appeared before a Takoradi Circuit Court for stealing deep freezers from the Takoradi Port.
The three security men are Johnson Adjei, 41, Richard Amoah, 33, and Benjamin Eshun, and the trader, Ekow Daniel, 26.
The four pleaded not guilty to the charges of stealing and were granted GHC5,000 bail each with a surety to re- appear on May 15.
Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Richard Boatey told the court presided over by Mr. Charles Bamfo Nimako that the complainant is a security personnel of the GPHA in Takoradi, whilst Daniel is a resident at Kwesiminstim near Takoradi.
ASP Boatey said on December 7, 2013, at about 0330 hours, a police and military night patrol team intercepted a Kia Taxi cab with registration number WR2670-13 at New-Takoradi roundabout and a search conducted in the vehicle revealed a deep freezer concealed in the booth.
ASP Boatey said the patrol team questioned Daniel, an occupant of the vehicle where he got the deep freezer from and he replied that he picked it at the railway station.
The officers then escorted him to the railway station where they found two more deep freezers hidden in a bush.
ASP Boatey said Daniel then disclosed that a certain security man at GHPHA asked him to send them to his house at New-Takoradi.
The officers accompanied the taxi driver and Daniel to the security gate ten (10) at the port premises where it was confirmed that Adjei was the one who asked him to pick the items.
Subsequently, Amoah and Eshun, who were also on duty at the time of the interrogation, were arrested to assist in investigation and were later charged with the offence.
