5 Jail Breakers Grabbed

FIVE INMATES, including three eighteen-year-olds, who swindled police officers on duty and escaped from the Akyem Tafo Police Cells in the Eastern region, have been re-arrested by the police. Two of the cell breakers were grabbed on the day of the incident, while the others were grabbed in separate operations. The escapees were Kwame Ashia, 29, Hakeem Seidu, 18, Clement Boateng, 18, Kojo Opoku, 18, and Bismark Owusu, 24. The five inmates were awaiting trial for possessing narcotic substances, stealing and defrauding by false pretense. Hakeem Seidu was re-arrested after engaging in another car theft following his escape.According to ASP John Yeboah,the Akyem Tafo District Police Commander,the five escapees have been dragged before the law court and have been remanded in police custody. The Deputy Public Relations (PRO) Officer of the Eastern Regional Police command, Gideon Boateng indicated in an earlier publication by the Daily Heritage that the incident is believed to have occurred at dawn. According to sources, a police officer on duty at around 4:20 am upon visiting the cells detected that the inmates had escaped by removing the concrete slab and passed through an opening created for a pan latrine at the back of the cells. The source further revealed that the police man on duty thereafter informed the District Police Commander, ASP John Yeboah who led a team to mount a search for the escaped inmates after which Clement Boateng and Bismark Owusu were re-arrested between Bonsu and Osino, while on the run that fateful day.
