One of the policemen who survived an alleged attack by Johnson Kombian, a businessman being held for killing two police officers in the Northern Region has appeared before an Accra Fast Track High Court.
Corporal Osei Bonsu, who mounted the witness box with walking aid, gave an account of what transpired on October 17, 2010 at Nankpanduri in the Bunkpurugu Yunyoo District.
Led in evidence by Mrs Marina Appiah Opare, Principal State Attorney, Corporal Bonsu told the court that he knows Kombian, saying he first met him at a fitting shop. He said Kombian used to ride a motor bike usually waved at the police whenever he saw them in town.
Corporal Bonsu said he was at Nankpanduri on duty with his two colleagues, Constables Prince Agyare and Owusu Frimpong, now deceased.
According to the witness, they were at duty post to provide security for traders and persons who often travelled to Togo.
Witness said about 500 meters away from the duty post, Constable Frimpong was shot in the arm and he also sustained injuries on his left arm and so lost control of his motorbike. Corporal Bonsu said he initially thought that he had sustained injuries in the left arm only but he later saw that his right hip was also hit.
Witness said he saw Kombian fired at Agyare killing him instantly, adding that the incident took place in broad day light. He said he and Frimpong were rushed to the hospital but he later heard that Constable Frimpong passed away.
Answering questions under cross-examination by Mr George Asamaning, defence counsel, Corporal Bonsu admitted that he was lucky to have survived the ambush. Witness disagreed with counsel that because he was in pain he could not see anything on the day of the incident.
Corporal Bonsu mentioned Kombian and his friend as the attackers adding that he did not know the name of Kombian�s colleague.
Witness admitted that Kombian had been declared as a fugitive.
He disagreed with counsel�s assertion that because Kombian had been declared a fugitive, he was nowhere near the scene. Witness said he personally saw Kombian shooting.
Kombian and his accomplices, who are on the run, were alleged to have ambushed the three policemen. Kombian has denied the charge of conspiracy and two counts of killing the two police officers before a seven member jury. He has been remanded into prison custody by the court.
