2 Convicted Over Wee

An Nsuta Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced a young man Richard Oppong to 20 years� imprisonment for possessing narcotics without lawful authority. Richard Oppong, 20, and his 17-year-old accomplice, Kwadwo Asuako, were preparing to smoke and supply cannabis when a police patrol team arrested them at Mampong in the Ashanti Region. The two were found guilty by the court, which order Kwadwo Asuako to appear before the Mampong District Magistrate Court for his punishment because of his age. Police prosecutor, Chief Inspector John Amponsah, told the court that the complainants were police personnel from the Asante Mampong District Police Command. According to prosecution, October 2, 2013, at about 12 noon, the police officers, who were on normal patrol duty at Mampong, saw the two cutting some pieces of papers. Chief Inspector Amponsah narrated that the duo took to their heels upon seeing the police, but they were chased and arrested with the dried leaves. Prosecution stated further that Richard Oppong and Kwadwo Asuako were later taken to the police station together with the exhibit, which were found to be cannabis after a forensic test conducted at the Forensic Laboratory in Accra. He said the accused persons were charged with possession of narcotics contrary to Section 2(1) of PNDC Law 236/10 and arraigned before court.
