Minister Pledges To Improve Sanitation

Dr Ephraim Avea Nsoh, the Upper East Regional Minister, has said sanitation in the Region was appalling, especially in the regional capital, and he would be personally involved in bringing the situation under control. He told the GNA in an interview that issues concerning sanitation were not negotiable and required the attention of all Municipal and District Chief Executives, political stakeholders and communities. Dr Nsoh said getting results stemmed from commitment from residents and all other stakeholders who would work at ensuring that buildings and other structures were not constructed on water ways, while indiscriminate littering and throwing of garbage into sewerage systems were halted. The Minister, who had interacted with workers of Zoomlion, said as part of efforts to get things working, the Regional Coordinating Council had set up a Regional Sanitation Committee to come out soon with recommendations on how to deal with people who litter. Speaking to Zoomlion workers earlier, Dr Nsoh told them that the sanitation in the region called for a unified force from all players to bring change, adding We need new ways and strategies to do better in the sanitation situation in the region. Other undesirable situations the Minister wants addressed were the obstruction of the movement of ambulances by other road users, especially motor riders, prevention of fire tenders from doing their work during emergencies and leaving broken down vehicles on roads. Dr Nsoh said he was working hard to bring change in attitudes of the people, adding that a sanitation implementation plan was in the offing to give guidelines on actions to be taken to address the problems.
