National Weightlifting Programmes Commence In Accra

The Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF) on Thursday, commenced a National Coaches Development Structure program dubbed "Training of the Trainers" at the Accra Sports Stadium. The course under the supervision of Dr. Kyle Calhoum Pierce, of the Louisiana State University in the USA, will discuss theoretical and practical aspects of weightlifting. The three-month project has participants from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Navy and Ghana Air force and among others. Dr. Calhourn Pierce assured the GWF of his readiness to stay behind after the expiration of the contract to help team Ghana prepare adequately for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. According to Dr Calhourn Pierce, participants will be taken through physiology of sport and exercise, bio-mechanics of sport and exercise, foundations of Sport and Exercise, Psychology and the rest. Ben Nunoo-Mensah, President of the GWF said the programme formed part of efforts to develop and promote the sport in Ghana. He said the three month exercise will educate participants on the modern trends. �We need this training to help broaden the scope of Weightlifting and to enhance our development programme and i am convinced at the end of the course, the sports will be better off,� he stated. The programme is under the sponsorship of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) through the Olympic Solidarity.
