Tomato Truck Kills Girl, 22

The recklessness of a Daf cargo track driver, on Tuesday, cost a 22-year-old woman her life at the SSNIT traffic lights in Bolgatanga, when the driver ignored a signal from the police officer on duty to stop. Kwame Bio, according to the police, was coming from the direction of Navrongo, and upon reaching the traffic light, was signalled by the Traffic Warden to stop, but he ignored the order and ran the truck into a motorbike rider at whose back the deceased was riding pillion.when the truck hit the motorbike, the rider jumped off, but the pillion rider was trapped under the truck and dragged for about 20 metres. In the process her head cracked and her legs mutilated. She died on the spot, as blood gushed out of her head and mutilated thigh. The Honda motorbike, with registration number M-13-UE 8642, on which they were riding, was also seriously damaged. Meanwhile, the cargo truck, with registration number AS 1769-12, also smashed into a taxi cab. The truck was loaded with tomatoes, and the police have since impounded it, with the driver in custody. The body of the deceased, Patience Aponaba, has been deposited at the Regional Hospital Mortuary, while the rider, Kenneth Ayamga, was also receiving treatment at the same hospital, but in stable condition. The accident, which occurred at about 9:30 a.m., halted human and vehicular movement for close to an hour.
