The Asante Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the Reverend Kofi Amfo-Akonnor, has urged the government to aggressively fight corruption to save the nation�s faltering economy. He said: �Our leaders should sit up and tackle corruption with zeal to help fix the economy and stop asking for prayers. �We have prayed enough and the time is up for us to get to work.� The Rev. Amfo-Akonnor, who was opening the 92nd Presbytery conference of the church in Kumasi, blamed the current socio-economic difficulties on weak leadership and the lack of political will to enforce the law. He expressed concern about the widespread poverty, inflation and massive degradation of the environment and said things would need to radically change. �Working together for a transformed mission,� is the theme of the five-day conference, which is discussing ways to enhance the growth of the church. The Rev. Amfo-Akonnor called on the congregation to focus on evangelism saying, spreading the gospel to bring salvation to people is a critical mission of the church. He called for the establishment of income-generation ventures to support development activities. He announced that beginning next year, the Clerk of the Presbytery and the Directors of Mission, Evangelism and Finance would be detached from the districts in order to enable them to concentrate on their departmental work. He added that, the Administration would also deploy scientific assessment tools, Human Resource and Management Department of the church to closely monitor the performance of the various branches for effective work.
