A member of the communication team of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Asamoah Gyamfi has debunked the perception that Nana Akufo-Addo�s appointment to chair the Commonwealth Observer Mission in South Africa is a ploy by the mission to retire him from active politics. South Africans voted last Wednesday to mark its 20 years in democracy and Ghana's former President John Agyekum Kufuor and twice Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, prior to the elections, together with other international observers, met to mark out plans to ensure transparency. The meeting was chaired by President John Agyekum Kufuor, who is leader of the AU Mission. Present at the meeting was the Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Mission, Nana Akufo-Addo; and the Chair of the Southern African Development Community, Hon. Mahadhi Juma Maalim. It is in this direction that many have speculated that the Commonwealth Observer Mission deliberately appointed Nana Akufo Addo to chair the mission to supervise the elections in South Africa to perhaps indirectly compel him to step down from active politics. But reacting the speculation on Okay Fm�s Ghana Decides program, Asamoah Gyamfi accused the ruling NDC of being behind the rumors. He believes panic literally runs through the heart of the ruling party anytime Nana Akufo Addo excels on the global scene. �They believe Nana Addo has the experience to give accurate report that will enhance the democracy in South Africa�.His appointment has nothing to do with his being an ex-statesmen as the NDC will want us to believe. Nana Addo believes in democratic principles and he has demonstrated it and I believe that has won him the admiration of the world�.the Commonwealth felt Nana Addo can chair the mission to observe the South African elections�..If the position is reserved for former Presidents in Africa then Nana Addo is not one yet and as such there are many former Presidents in Africa,� he asserted.
