Black Stars To Dominate Sunday's MTN SWAG Awards

Sunday's Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards Night at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra will be one with a difference, having been set aside to celebrate the unique achievement of the Black Stars over the past year. In 2013, the senior national team secured an enviable third straight FIFA Cup qualification at the expense of mighty Egypt, and SWAG deemed it fit to dedicate the 39th edition of its glamorous awards to the Stars honour just before they emplane to Brazil for the historic Mundial campaign. And for the first time, a Black Stars coach could pick up the flagship Sports Personality of the Year award as Kwasi Appiah stands tall among the nominees for the top prize. And with the Coach of the Year prize already guaranteed, the first Ghanaian coach to qualify the nation to the senior World Cup is tipped to steal the show on the night, to be graced by a host of dignitaries, including the Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, and the Brazil Ambassador to Ghana, Irene Vida Gala, as the Special Guest of Honour. Also expected to spice up the nights rich package is the president of the IAAF, Lamine Diack, from Senegal. The high-powered Black Stars representation will be spearheaded by the three Footballer of the Year nominees - Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah and Sulley Muntari. For the fourth year running, MTN is still the proud sponsor of the prestigious SWAG Awards event, which has attracted a host of companies which have also thrown in their support. The President of SWAG, Mr Ackah Anthony, expects this years event to be exceptional in terms of packaging.
