Journalists Introduced To ECOWAS Brown Cards

The Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme has organized a days training workshop to educate journalists on the relevance of the motor insurance cover known as ECOWAS Brown Card. The seminar, dubbed: Ghana National Bureau ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme training programme for the media, was held at the head office of the National Insurance Commission (NIC) in Accra on Tuesday. Gabriel Glover, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana National Bureau, in a presentation to explain the rationale behind the issuance of the Brown Cards, said the main objective of the Scheme is to ensure prompt and fair compensation to victims of motor accidents caused by non-citizen motorist visiting their territory from other ECOWAS member states. The system guarantees a motor insurance cover, which leads to the realization of the free movement objectives of ECOWAS, Mr. Glover added. He added that it aims to establish a common settlement of claims. The Brown Card was essentially a territorial extension of the local insurance cover. Briefing journalists on how to acquire the Brown Cards legitimately, he said Brown Cards must be obtained from right source and the right source is an insurance company that issued the original local cover. According to him, the Bureau was embarking on an extensive education and publicity to popularize the ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme and facilitate free movement within the West African sub-region.
