More Than 2 Million Women In Sub-Sahara Africa Have Obstetric Fistula

More than two million women in sub-sahara Africa have Obstetric Fistula. In Ghana there is no data pertaining to that, but in 2005 out of 157,000 births in Danso in the Ashanti Region, 150 cases of fistula were recorded. This shows how severe the case is. This gloomy picture was painted at a ceremony to inaugurate a National Committee on Fistula to address the issue. Obstetric fistula is a medical condition in which a fistula (hole) develops between either the rectum and vagina or between the bladder and vagina after prolonged, severe or failed childbirth, when adequate medical care is not available. Its tendency to occur in women in less developed countries who do not have health resources comparable to developed nations is high.
