Isaac Anderson, 24, a butcher at Sofo Line in Kumasi, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for stealing a motorbike valued at GH�2,100, belonging to Alhaji Javaro Usman, a trader at Ejura.
He was convicted on his own plea.
According to the prosecutor, Police Detective Inspector F.P. Davour, the convict was among a motorbike-stealing syndicate operating in Ejura, Kumasi and Techiman areas.
He said on May 5, at about 0300 hours Anderson, together with an accomplice, who is on the run, travelled from Kumasi to Ejura. They broke the garage of the complainant and stole the motorbike.
The prosecutor told the court that an eyewitness saw the convict riding the motorbike and heading towards Ejura-Kumasi road and informed the police. The police then hinted the various police barriers on the road but the convict managed to pass through the Abountam, Bosofour and Nintin barriers.
Noticing that the police were closing in on him in a chase, Anderson stopped at the next police barrier and was arrested, but his accomplice managed to escape through the bush.
He said the police sent the thief together with the motorbike to Ejura, where the complainant identified the bike as his.
Before passing judgment, the presiding judge, David P.W. Amedior, described the convict as a notorious criminal who ought to be ostracised from society for some time.
