CHRAJ Urges Government To Invest In Fight Against Corruption

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), on Tuesday suggested to government to invest in the fight against corruption, by providing adequate funding to anti-corruption agencies, and supporting their activities. Mr Richard Quayson, Deputy Commissioner of CHRAJ said over the years, Ghana has made some level of progress in the fight against the canker of corruption, but governmental support to anti-corruption agencies remains very vital to them in their efforts to eliminate corruption or reduce it to the barest minimum. He observed that corruption has a huge ravaging effect on society, and the prize we pay as a nation for it is very enormous. Mr Quayson made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sideline of the on-going Fourth Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa. He said it is our duty as a nation to show to the rest of the world that we can manage our own affairs when it comes to the issue of fighting corruption. The Deputy Commissioner urged government to ensure that Parliament passes the National Anti-corruption Action Plan into law, which was drafted by the Commission in collaboration with the Office of the President, Parliament and the Economic and Organized Crime Office. He regretted that the bill has been laying before Parliament over the past three years, which does not portray any seriousness being attached to it, adding that everyone should be involved in getting Parliament adopt it. Mr Quayson said the on-going conference would enable them share experience in their struggle against corruption and also equip them for the task ahead.
