The Police Administration has apologised to the public for the unannounced roadblocks around the Movenpick Hotel that caused heavy traffic on roads in Accra last Friday. It stated that the road blocks were part of security measures put in place for the ECOWAS heads of state meeting in the national capital. Assurance to improve arrangement A statement signed and issued in Accra and by the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Cephas Tetteh, said �due to the personalities involved, there was the need for some stringent measures to secure the city. �The police are calling on the motoring the public to bear with us for the inconveniences that the unannounced roadblocks around the Moevenpic Hotel caused. �While apologising for the inconveniences caused, we wish to assure the general public of an improved arrangement next time,� the statement said. Unannounced blocks There was heavy vehicular traffic in Accra last Friday when West African leaders converged on the city to discuss issues affecting the sub-region. The traffic was mainly due to the closure of some routes by the police. With little information on the blocked routes, motorists struggled to comb the city in search of congestion-free roads. All routes leading to the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, the venue for the meeting, were thick with traffic. The situation was, particularly worse from the Shangrila Hotel towards the 37 Military Hospital. ECOWAS heads of state were in Accra last Friday at the invitation of their Chairman, President John Dramani Mahama, to review the security situation in Nigeria where Boko Haram has been a constant threat to lives and property, and in northern Mali where the Tuareg rebels and other armed groups recently renewed their threat to take control over that part of the country.
