No Salaries For Local Council Staff Since 1999

Staff of Sub-District Councils in the various districts nation-wide are fuming over the governments refusal to pay salaries due them since 1999. Mr. Acheampong Sampson, General Secretary of the Association of Area Councils, told a press conference in Kumasi that in 1999, the government employed workers in the various area councils as staff, with appointment letters from the assemblies, but that has been the end, since no salaries have been paid them. It was disclosed that when they raised concerns about the delayed payment of salaries, the Kufuor administration approved 0.5 billion (old currency) to offset the arrears, upon which the workers were asked to provide their curriculum vitas, but that was the end. According to Sampson, after waiting for years, they reminded the government about the delayed payment of their salaries, but again nothing was heard about the issue. They have, therefore, pleaded with the government, through Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, to, as matter of urgency, bail them out of their plight, to enable them take care of their families.
