GBC Boss Advocates Aggressive Move Towards Digital Broadcasting

The Director-General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Major Albert Don-Chebe (Rtd), has underlined the need for Ghana to fast-track the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. This, he said, is necessary to assist strengthen the nation�s television (TV) stations, to compete favourably with their contemporaries abroad, in terms of better image and sound quality, lower transmission costs, increase in the number of channels and services, as well as better efficiency in spectrum. Major Don-Chebe, who was launching GBC�s digital channels and ultra-modern digital transmission centre in Kumasi, said the migration would significantly help to address challenges associated with the existing analogue terrestrial system - ghosting, blurred images and lines across images and poor sound quality. Digital migration, which involves replacing analogue transmission systems with digital versions, would offer more programmes, improved quality and durability of broadcasting. With the Kumasi launch, viewers with digital TV sets and decoders in Ashanti Region could now access GTV Sports Plus, GTV Life, GTV Religion, GTV Govern and Obonu TV programmes carried by the regional office of the corporation. Major Don-Chebe announced that three more digital channels would be added to their product line by the end of 2015. Mr Samuel Sarpong, Regional Minister, praised the GBC management for the bold steps to enhance its services to the public. Nana Adu Mensah Asare, Amakomhene, urged the media to maintain high standards of professionalism and avoid anything likely to fuel tension and confusion in the society.
