Two Fulani Men Remanded For Supplying Arms To Robbers

An Accra Circuit Court, on Monday, remanded two Fulani herdsmen into police custody for allegedly supplying arms to criminals to engage in robbery. The suspects, Alhaji Umaro Mohammed and Alhaji Buba, aka Baki, were charged with abetment of crime and robbery. They were said to have been supplying arms and ammunition to two Fulani boys, Bami Mohammed and Ibrahim Umaru, to commit crime, to wit robbery. The two were also said to have robbed passengers travelling from Kumasi to Accra. The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the various charges leveled against them when they appeared before the court, presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri. The Prosecutor, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Atibilla, told the court that the accused persons are Fulani herdsmen residing at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region. He said, in 2013, there were a series of robberies on the Accra-Kumasi highway, with most of the perpetrators being Fulani. �Some of these robbers were arrested, and they are on prison remand, including Bami Mohammed and Ibrahim Umaru,� he said. ACP Atibilla further told the court that on June 5, 2014, the police had information that the accused persons sponsored the Fulani boys by supplying arms and ammunition to them to commit robbery. He said, at the same time, the police had a tipoff that the accused persons positioned themselves on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, and robbed passengers travelling from Kumasi to Accra of their monies and valuables in 2013. He further said that based on the information, the accused persons were arrested, and that investigations were still ongoing. They are to reappear on June 23, 2014 for continuation of the hearing.
