35, 000 Nurses, Midwives Declare Strike

Over 35,000 student nurses and midwives across the country have withdrawn their services from all hospitals and clinics nationwide effective yesterday, July 1, 2014, over government�s failure to pay their two years� accumulated allowance. This was contained in a statement issued and copied to the DAILY HERITAGE in Koforidua by the National Executive Board (NEB) of the Ghana Nurses and Midwives Trainees Association (GNMTA). The strike, according to the statement will be followed by a demonstration in Accra on July 7 to register their grievances. Below is the full statement issued by GNMTA: The National Executive Board (NEB) of the Ghana Nurse & Midwife Trainees' Association has finally and officially declared a NATIONWIDE STRIKE & DEMONSTRATION against Government for the delay in the release of clearance letters and delay in the payment of long overdue trainee allowances. The NEB of GNMTA therefore, by the power vested in it by the Parliament of Ghana as a registered Association DECREE that ALL STUDENTS should CEASE going to work in the various hospitals and health centres across Ghana from 1ST OF JULY, 2014 TILL FURTHER NOTICE.... However, ALL STUDENTS are to gather at ACCRA (CIRCLE, OBRA SPOT) for a massive PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION through Adabraka, Rawlings Park then to Ministries in a procession with Brass band and POLICE ESCORT... Time is 10am prompt with media coverage. The Association will therefore entreat all Authorities to ALLOW STUDENTS to fully comply with this Serious directive since it may not take it light with anyone who infringes on such legal right of students... All STUDENTS are entreated to be in their uniforms with Red bands indicating how exasperated we are... ALL MUST TREAT THIS AS A MATTER WITH UTMOST PRIORITY WITH ZEAL N COURAGE... DON'T BE TOO WISE TO GO TO THE WARD WHILE OTHERS ARE ON STRIKE....
