Pensioner Cautions Colleagues Against Drinking

Mr. David Gbordzekpor, 84, a retired officer of the Department of Social Welfare (DSW), has urged colleague pensioners to resist overindulgence in alcohol. He said it was pathetic that some pensioners would use their scanty allowances on alcohol rather than food to the detriment of their health. Mr Gbordzekpor said this at a get-together organized for some senior citizens by the Akatsi-North District Assembly on Tuesday, Republic Day, at Ave-Afiadenyigba. He said the knowledge of senior citizens was still needed in nation building, directly and indirectly and therefore they, (Senior Citizens) must stay focused. Mr. James Gunu, the District Chief Executive , called on health institutions, banks and transport companies to treat the elderly with respect when they came seeking their services. He noted with sadness the unwillingness of doctors, nurses and even national service persons to accept postings to rural areas. Mr. Gunu announced that the Assembly was considering a special package to support retirees to register and renew their national health insurance memberships. He announced another package to plough one acre of farm land for free for any senior citizenwho was already in farming. The DCE said there was also the possibility of co-opting some retired officers into the Assemblys sub-committees to enrich delivery. He said 85 of the 120 kilometers of feeder roads in the area would be reshaped by Feeder Roads Department shortly. Mr. Gunu said the Assembly was listed among 13 other districts, who won this years US $200,000 each under the Ghana Social Opportunity Project (GhaSOP), for roads improvement and tree planting. The Pensioners commended the DCE for his visionary leadership and called on all other pensioners to join the district association. The DCE gave the 45 retirees souvenirs and free transport back home.
