Nkrumah Circle Submerged Again

Recent heavy rain falls in the Greater Accra region have caused serious issues for local people who live and work at the Kwame Nkrumah there as the area was partially submerged after yesterdays downpour in the city. Because of construction, the gutters are underground and choked with the water having nowhere to go, explained Paa Kwasi, a taxi driver. He also warned of the dangers drivers face when the roads are covered in inches of water. With so much water, it is impossible to see potholes, and drivers risk damage to their cars and vans. Splashing of water was another problem cited by people in the bus stop area at Kwame Nkrumah Circle. A vendor, whose MTN booth is set up directly next to the street so it would be convenient to sell credit to people riding in cars, said that drivers often rush and she and her booth get splashed. A motor rider also complained that if the water is deep enough, he cant ride through without getting completely wet. Besides issues with the roads, heavy rains also cause problems in relation to sanitation. It is not uncommon for garbage to be discarded in gutters or just thrown on the ground. When it rains and the water levels rise, gutters overflow and the waste, mixed with littered trash, is spread throughout the entire area. With hustle and bustle at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle area and the lack of proper means to handle trash disposal, this poses a serious health hazard as many adults and children are exposed to unsanitary materials. Without proper road repair and sanitation measures, these issues will continue to plague the Greater Accra region every time heavy rains come.
