New Sports Minister Must Sit Up - GBA Boss Peter Zwennes

The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority, Peter Zwennes has charged the newly appointed Youth and Sports Minister,Mahama Ayarga to help lift the image of all sports in the country, and not only football. He said, over the years, boxing has lifted the image of Ghana on the world stage but most often left in the dark without any attention. According to him, Ghana has had a lot of winners at the Commonwealth Games and Richard Commeys unanimous victory over UK boxer Gary Buckland means a lot to Ghana sports and as a matter fact, government must give the sports the needed attention it deserves. His victory means a lot to Ghana," he remarked. "We have had a long tradition of champions at the Commonwealth level, blazing the trail of Roy Ankrah, Peter Robinson, Love Allotey, Joe Tetteh, D K Poison, Azumah Nelson just to mention a few. He believes the years down the line have not been the same for Ghana boxing but hopeful the discipline has placed this country on the world map. He added that sports in the country recorded its lowest ebb as a result of the recent poor showing by the senior mens team, the Black Stars, at the just ended Brazil World Cup. Boxing has been relegated to the background and at this level we feel it is time for government to pay attention especially at this level. Richard Commey, claimed the vacant title with a unanimous victory after the three judges scored the bout 117-111, 117-111 and 118-110. He becomes the 27th Ghanaian boxer to have won the commonwealth title.
