Metro Mass Hit By Fuel Shortage!

Hundreds of buses belonging to the Metro Mass Company Limited, have been grounded across the country because of lack of fuel. This is because their supplier, GOIL, is unable to meet their demands for fuel products, which are gradually running out on the local market. So far all the depots of Metro Mass across the country from the north to the south, has been affected by the fuel shortage. A highly placed source said for weeks now, the company has been suffering from intermittent shortages. Our principal supplier of diesel happens to be GOIL, which is affected by the general slow-down of supply in the system, but of late things have become much worse, he said. The Metro Mass Transport Company was established under the erstwhile Kufuor Administration to offer low cost, subsidized transportation for many of Ghanas poor and under-privileged. Since its inception it has traditionally posted loss accounts, due to the fact that its fares and charges are dictated by government, which has been wary of allowing the company to operate at commercial rates. The cumulative effect, over the years, has been that Metro Mass has not been able to go onto the market to buy its fuel like other commercial operators.
