The Office of the President has presented a disability-friendly vehicle to a visually impaired disk jockey (DJ) at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) following an appeal he made to the President. Mr Sellasie Sikanku, popularly known as DJ Odo, attempted to clear a car sent to him by his mates in the United State of America (USA) but was prevented from doing so by the Ministry of Finance because the law does not allow a blind person to drive that kind of car. In an attempt to clear the car at the port, he said, �the Ministry of Finance refused to approve the document, explaining that the car is not user friendly to a visually impaired person like me�. He said his mates in the USA contributed to buy the car for him as their way of showing appreciation for his work. Appeal to the President Six months after failing to clear his car, he said, the car was allocated by port officials to another person on January 2014. According to him, the treatment meted out to him by the Ministry of Finance compelled him to appeal to the President. The Presidency assured him that his car would be replaced, and that assurance was fulfilled with the presentation of a disability-friendly vehicle. Media reaction The challenges Mr Selassie encountered when he tried to clear his car from the port became a topical issue in the media, particularly on radio. Mr Yaw Boadu-Ayeboafoh, the Director in charge of Newspapers at the Graphic Communications Group Limited, took the matter up and advocated that Sellasie be allowed to clear his car from the port. Mr Sikanku expressed his dissatisfaction with the treatment meted out to him by the port officials and described the situation as unfair. He advised that the law restricting disabled persons from clearing cars from the port should be reviewed to enable them to enjoy the privileges other citizens have.
