Court Restrains NPP Executives

A Ho High Court has retrained the Ho Central Constituency executives of the New Patriotic (NPP) from holding themselves as executives of the party because they were not properly elected per the constitution of the party. The decision of the court, which was presided over by Justice Patrick Baayeh, was based on promptings by a section of the party followers who rushed to the court, insisting that the restrained executives were not properly elected. The plaintiffs statement of claim was that on 28th December, 2013, Constituency elections were held to elect the executives of the Ho Central Constituency. But before the elections, several irregularities arose, which were contrary to the NPPs constitution and regulations governing elections. This compelled the Regional Secretariat to suspend the election. Justice Baayeh noted in his ruling that in an attempt to amicably resolve these issues, two meetings were held in Accra on 1st December, 2013 and 20th December, 2013, but the issues could not be resolved, noting that on Friday 27th December, 2013, the National Coordinator of NASARA Club arrived in Ho and caused an announcement to be made to the effect that the election of the Ho Central Constituency executives would be held the following morning, 28th December, 2013. The Judge continued that notwithstanding protestation from the Regional Secretariat, the election took place and defendants were allegedly elected without the participation of the plaintiffs, who had all evinced intentions to contest some executive positions in the Ho Central Constituency and that the election of the defendants were conducted secretly and, therefore, illegal as it was done in breach of the NPP constitution. Meanwhile, the Court has ordered the Regional executives of the NPP to appoint a 3 member interim executive committee to carry out the day to- day function of the Constituency but should not take any major decision like conducting elections and representing the Constituency at any level of party activities.
