Ta-Ampuurum Kunkuan Basic School Cries For Support

The Ta-ampuurum- Kunkuan Basic School of Sumbrungu, a suburb of Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region is grappling with problems that are hindering teaching and learning. The School started as a primary school in 1994 through community initiative with support from Peace Advocates and Voluntary Organisers' Association (PAVOA) but was taken over by Ghana Education Service in 2004. Although the school has grown to include a kindergarten and a junior high school it lacks classroom structures to contain the growing student population. Speaking at a get-together party organised by PAVOA to acknowledge the efforts of the teachers and to chart a way forward, the Headmaster; Mr Clement Bafamah, said an uncompleted building of the primary school which was taken over by Ghana Education Service since 2006 has not been completed and that is hindering teaching and learning. The building is roofed without windows and doors. The floor is rough but the pupils have no option but to stay in such deplorable condition to study, he said. Mr Bafamah said the primary school also lacks furniture. The Acting Director of PAVOA in charge of Peace Monitoring and Advocacy , Mr Abobo-um Akawi-iri expressed dissatisfaction about the hazards the students and teachers are exposed to especially during the harmattan and rainy seasons and appealed to public-spirited individuals and organisations to come to the aid of the educational facility.
