An NPP presidential hopeful, Alan Kyerematen has described himself as a catalyst for unity, a trait he says is critical to the NPP securing victory in 2016.
Almost all the 7 aspirants who have delivered their campaign messages centred on uniting the party, a clear indication that the NPP lacks the much needed party unity. Agaion the probability of some supporters deciding not to vote come 2016 should their aspirant fail to be the flag bearer is also an issue that needs to be considered.
Mr Kyerematen, who is contesting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries made this disclosure in a radio interview with Prince Ofori Atta, the host of New Mercury's Super Power Show in Kumasi.
"I have the record in the NPP as a unifier, my aim is to unite the party for victory 2016".
"I was central in sustaining the NPP. In 1992 as the chairman of the Young Executive Forum we supported the party financially. In 1996 the Forum sponsored me to contest as a presidential aspirant against former Prez Kufour, JH Mensah, Kwame Mpianim and the likes.
I was approached by some leading party members who asked me to step down because they thought I was young and had more years ahead of me. I listened and made that supreme sacrifice for the sake of party peace and unity".
"During the 2007 NPP presidential primaries out of the 17 candidates, Nana Addo and I pulled enough votes to go for a second round. For peace and unity to prevail and to ease the tension that the close contest had caused within the party I unconditionally stepped aside for Nana Addo to go unopposed".
He maintained that he conceded twice to Nana Addo and also tasked his supporters to throw their weight behind Nana Addo. Again after 2007 primaries he followed Nana Addo on his campaign tour introducing the flagbearer on the NPP's campaign platform.
"I can unite the NPP in a great effort to build a new NPP".
Ahead of the Special delegates congress slated August 31, Mr Kyerematen is urging delegates to base the selection of candidates on their track record in the party that proves that they can indeed promote unity in the NPP.
