The Government Midwives Association has decided to break away from its parent body, the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA). In pursuit of the decision, the association has introduced a new name, National Association of Registered Midwives, Ghana (NARMG). The President of the association, Ms Rizwana Hawa Amoako-Agyei, announced the decision of the midwives to break away from the GRNA at the Second Biennial National Midwives Conference and Continuous Professional Development in Kumasi. The four-day professional development conference was on the theme, �Accelerating the Attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4, 5 and 6; Midwives: A friend to the Community� and was used to unveil the new name amid the blowing of trumpets by the Ghana Police band. Meanwhie, all members have started withdrawing their membership from the GRNA. After the breakaway, the association hopes to bargain for its salaries, advise government on the education of midwives, career progression and establish best practices of midwifery in the country. Change of name Ms Amoako-Agyei explained that the members decided to change the name from the Government Midwives Association to the NARMG because the previous name did not give a national character to the association and prevented midwives in the private sector from joining it. In a speech read on his behalf, the Minister of Health, Dr Kwaku Agyemang Mensah, urged the midwives to redouble their efforts in helping the government to achieve MDGs 4, 5 and 6.
