Two tertiary institutions have submitted their Ebola-preparedness plans to the Ministry of Education, while others with university hospitals are preparing their plans in line with the national response. The institutions are the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho and the University of Education, Winneba which have planned a postponement of their reopening to ensure that they are fully prepared. The Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education, Prof. Mahama Duwiejua, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, added that other institutions with hospitals were acting in consonance with the national strategy in the prevention of the disease. He said the plans and the coordinated efforts of other institutions involved in the national response strategy to prevent an occurrence of the pandemic were reassuring and would ensure that universities and tertiary institutions remained safe places when they reopen. The directive The Ministry of Education on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 directed all tertiary institutions to submit their Ebola-preparedness plans by August 26, 2014 to it. The directive was part of the national plans aimed at ensuring that the Ebola virus, which has plagued some West African countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria, was contained. With the plans rolled out, universities and tertiary institutions can reopen from August 27, 2014 as directed by the government, except for those who have postponed their reopening. However, the continued strike of members of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) may further delay the reopening of the universities.
