BAG organizes Greater Accra Homowo championships

Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG), organized a two day Greater Accra Championship to commemorate the Ga Homowo festival at the Hathramani hall of the Accra Sports Stadium. The two day event, witnessed participation from the U-15, U-18, Ladies, Singles, Men Singles, mid-veterans and Veterans. Speaking at the opening ceremony, the president of BAG, Nestor Galley said Badminton will be taken to all schools starting next academic year. Ghana Education Service (GES) Greater Accra, had agreed to include the sport in their annual inter school tournament and plans are also far advanced to introduce the sport in other regions. Charles Dake, Greater Accra Chairman of BAG and a member of the Africa Badminton Association added that, though there are insufficient materials to develop the sport but there is hope for the discipline in the country. He said unfortunately, badminton lacks the development that we need due to lack of materials. The championship is to achieve the full potential and provide practical step by step assistance in terms of cash or kind. We are also to raise awareness and quality play by means of upgrading existing equipments and providing new facilities. Dake urged those who participated at the just ended Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to prepare for bigger challenges and tasked the younger ones to emulate the achievement of the senior players. Badminton has shown great prospects as sports in Ghana following successes in recent times in the African Badminton Championship. Ghana won Gold and Bronze at the Botswana International Badminton Tourney held last two months in Lobatse.
