Jailbird Lynched At Tema

A 42-year-old man described as �jail bird,� has been lynched by some angry mob at Community 11, Tema, for allegedly breaking into vehicles. The deceased, Yakubu Kalifa, resident of Community 1, Tema, was said to have broken into vehicles to steal valuables and batteries from three vehicles parked in the area, but was caught in the act and the mob meted out instant justice to him. He allegedly broke into the vehicles parked by some men in different locations around Cool Base, a popular drinking spot in the area, and was nabbed as he allegedly tried to force his way into one of the vehicles. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Olivia Turkson, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that on August 27, 2014 at about 3:00 am, the Community 11 night patrol team went on their usual duty. While on patrol, the team came across a male body with multiple wounds, hands and legs fastened with nylon a piece of rope. When police tried waking him up, he was not breathing and police called for assistance. Police later in the day had information that the deceased, a notorious burglar who breaks into people�s cars and steals valuables and batteries, was caught at the drinking spot when he attempted breaking into a vehicle parked there. The suspect was said to have taken a laptop bag without the computer, broken glasses of the vehicles and ransacked the cars and realizing that he had got anything, decided to take the car batteries. Further investigations led police to locate the deceased�s father who admitted that the son, whom he described as �jail bird,� was a notorious criminal who was in prison; but he was not aware that theson had completed his jail term and still harassing innocent people. The Tema Regional Police Command appealed to victims of such criminal activities to report the matter to the police. However, the Command cautioned against meting out instant justice against persons alleged to be criminals.
