Flow Of Gas To Stabilize Electricity Prices

Dr. Emmanuel Annan, Board Chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), says the coming on stream of the Atuobo gas power plant had the potential to stabilize electricity prices as it was more cost efficient than crude oil. Authorities at the Volta River Authority revealed that Ghana spends over$3 million on crude oil daily to produce electricity compared to $1.5 million that would be spent on gas. Dr. Annan has therefore expressed satisfaction at the work done on the Atuobo Gas Station constructed by Sinopec, a Chinese firm when board members and some staff of the PURC visited the facility at Atuabo in the Ellembelle District. He said Ghana had demonstrated how natural resources could be used in harnessing the well-fare of society. Mr. Kofi Lartey, Managing Engineer at the plant, said test run was still ongoing and that measures had been taken to ensure utmost security and safety at the facility. "We are meeting the aggressive timeline set for ourselves. Pre-commission and commission of certain parts and systems are currently underway to ensure that much time is not wasted on test run," he said.
