Breast Care International in collaboration with Peace and Love Hospital have trained 65 Members of the Presbyterian Ministers' Wives Association(PMWA) branch in the Eastern Region. The training workshop forms part of the Community Breast Health Promoters training exercise by the NGO which aim at impacting basic breast health knowledge and its related issues in order to serve as voluntary breast health promoters who would engage their local congregations and communities in breast health education. Similar workshops have been organized for members of the association in the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra Region. Speaking at the program,Dr.Beatrice Wiafe Addai,President of BCI,expressed worry about what he calls neglect of breast cancer disease in the country. According to her,breast cancer kills more than the death toll of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis combined. She explained that,one person dies from Breast Cancer every 69 seconds worldwide.She called on women to regularly undergo breast screening exercise for early detection and prevention. Dr.Wiafe stated that,the NGO together with its partners will continue to educate the public on breast health to help reduce its menace as well as mortality rate. She urged the media to collaborate in breast health education. The President of Presbyterian Ministers' Wives Association, Mrs.Rosekel Omanyo said,the training has enlightened the participants on breast cancer and its related health issues which has placed them in better position to pass on the knowledge gained to their congregants and residents of communities where they live to help the fight against the disease. The Former Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, Michael Teye Nyaunu commended BCI for their leading role in reducing the spread of the disease. He charged husbands to encourage their wives to often undergo breast screening exercise for early detection. The programme was sponsored by Roche African Project.
